"Prepare for the Second Course" With This Hannibal Teaser

With the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in full swing, showrunners and casts have been dishing on some of our favorite programs. The new season of "Hannibal" begins on February 28 and the Season 2 trailer is expected later today after its premiere at the TCA panel.  In the mean time, this teaser should whet our appetite. I cannot wait to see what Bryan Fuller and company serve us this season. It should be delicious.

Trailer Tuesday 10/1

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 dominated the competition this weekend with over $35 million in box office earnings. I highly doubt that it will catch this year's animated powerhouse, Despicable Me 2, which has a total gross of over $361 million. Let's get to the trailers.

Flashback Friday: TV Shows I Miss (Part One)

Flashback Friday is a series where I get in the wayback machine and revisit some of my favorite things from years past. It can be anything really, random stuff from teh intarwebz, books, movies, games, et cetera.

I love television and I have my entire life. Over the course of my 26 years, I've seen a lot of TV shows that have come and gone. Some ran their course, some were canceled too soon. Some I didn't get to see during their first run. Especially since we're at the beginning of the Fall TV premiere season, I thought I'd take a look at some gems which I particularly miss and would love to see again in some form. In addition, this list isn't ranked. I just happened to go with the first few shows that popped into my brain. I'll definitely be thinking of more.

Emmy Nominations + My Picks

My personal picks are **in asterisks.** There are some that I abstained from choosing. I had some doubles, so just deal with it. I'll have a full Emmy Awards wrap-up after the ceremony. Neil Patrick Harris hosts the awards show tonight on CBS.

Who's Next? New Doctor to be Announced Tomorrow + My Picks

The announcement is coming people. I mean, it's tomorrow and in less than twenty four hours we'll know the identity of the next Doctor. The BBC plans a special for Sunday August 4 which will not only be a retrospective of the half-century of Doctor Who, but will also unveil the actor or actress who has been cast in the role of the Twelfth Doctor. At San Diego Comic Con a few weeks ago, Steven Moffat joked that he was currently writing the script for the Christmas Episode, in which the Doctor will regenerate, and that he wasn't on the page in which he killed the Doctor... yet. It's reported that the casting process for Twelve has been underway and was given code-name Whodini.

According to a press release from the BBC, with breaking news on Thursday from Bleeding Cool, the special will air on Sunday, but recent updates included an updated webite. Hopefully there will be no information leaks as to the identity of the new Doctor in the next 23 hours. At SDCC, Moffat threatened to discontinue any Comic Con exclusives if the trailer for the 50th Anniversary special was leaked online. Doctor Who fans for the most part have been pretty great about that sort of thing, considering Season 7.2 shipped early, allowing buyers the ability to see "The Name of the Doctor" before it aired.

But who will be the person to take over for Matt Smith when he makes his departure in December? Since the debut of Doctor Who in 1963, eleven men have officially portrayed The Doctor, with a host of others who have filled the role unofficially and alternatively on television, in audio books, and on stage. I, for one, was shocked to see that they were making this announcement more than four months before the Christmas Special is to air, but I'm super excited for Sunday.

People have asked me my opinion on the subject. I had tweeted previously that I had a post planned with a list and I started out with about twenty potential Doctors. This included Rupert Grint and Simon Pegg, which I have seen show up on the lists of others. I also had initially considered Matthew Lewis and Henry Cavill as well, but I quickly realized that I was going to have to make some decisions and narrow my picks down. There has been a lot of interest in Dame Helen Mirren as well. But here are my top twelve potential Doctors. My thoughts after the break!

Around the Web: Dalek Relaxation Tape

In the past, I've used tapes to relax and help clear my head. I find that no matter your religion affiliation, meditation helps you to center and become a more relaxed and better you. That's why, when I found out about the Dalek Relaxation Tape, I jumped at the chance to learn some basic principles from our Dalek masters.

The Dalek Relaxation Tape has everything you need to helpe EXTERMINATE your tension. You're left with such a feeling of contentment that you're able to OBEY any command. I was surprised that Daleks had a concept of relaxation, but through the Dalek Relaxation Tape, all of my concerns have been allayed. Just take a listen, I know that you will be able to ACCOMMODATE this tape into your own meditation program.

The audio for this was also posted on Tumblr several weeks ago. Here is the original post!

The Dalek Relaxation Tape will definitely ABATE any feelings of stress that you might have. Enjoy!

She Said, He Said: Prequel to 'The Name of the Doctor'

Terrible Mothers of Popular Culture

Today's Geeky Question of the Day in the Kentucky Geek Girl community on Facebook asked, "Who is the best mom of Popular Culture?" The more I thought about it, the more I realized that there are some pretty terrible moms in Pop Culture as well, even specifically in Science Fiction. Folks in the ?otD thread included some great moms such as Molly Weasley, Catelyn Tully, and even *shudder* Lori Grimes, but I thought that there has to be a flip side to this. So, I put on my Thinking Fedora and came up with a sampling of terrible mothers of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror.

Jackie Tyler is one of the best moms in pop culture

These are by no means in-depth character analyses. This is more just a fun look at the way people perceive characters, not a true character study. I don't necessarily agree with all of these points 100%, but I think that there some pretty obvious points. Also, there will be spoilers, which I am sorry is a bit unavoidable. If you haven't seen these TV shows or watched these movies, then either don't read or prepared to have some details spoiled. List after the break.

Matt Smith Shaves His Head: I Am Disappoint

Filming has begun on Matt Smith's new project How to Catch a Monster, directed by our favorite lover of everything we love Ryan "Hey Girl" Gosling.

This is the current synopsis on IMDB:

A single mother is swept into a dark underworld, while her teenage son discovers a road that leads him to a secret underwater town.

So, that's cool. Filming has just begun in Detroit, so there's not a lot about the movie out there. I did see that they're still casting for the movie. What I do know, however, thanks to Buzzfeed, is that Matt Smith has had to shave his beautiful head for this role. The pictures are a bit unsettling. Hit the jump to view them.

'Matilda' and 'Kinky Boots' sweep Tony nominations

It's that time of year again, my friends! The Tony Award nominations were announced this morning! As a lover of Broadway, I take this as an opportunity to see what musicals that I should be listening to. I mean, I'm nowhere near New York and I don't think I'll be visiting any time soon, so I really must live vicariously through Official Cast Recordings and the stories of my Twitter followers that jet set to the Great White Way.

This year, four musicals rose to the top to be considered the best of the season: Bring It On, Matilda, A Christmas Story, and Kinky Boots. One striking thing about all four of these titles is that the stories originally appeared on the silver screen at some point in the last thirty years (Kinky Boots most recently in 2005). Furthermore, with the exception of Bring It On and Kinky Boots (which is based on a true story), the movies that came before were adapted from books. Even in Broadway it's a great year for bibliophiles.

Flashback Friday: Five Favorite Teen Shows of the '90s

Flashback Friday is a series where I get in the wayback machine and revisit some of my favorite things from years past. It can be anything really, random stuff from teh intarwebz, books, movies, games, et cetera.

I was browsing through the murky waters of the Internet this week and found what I thought would be the perfect topic for the next installment of Flashback Friday. I've been pretty honest about my addiction to television and how it spans over twenty years. While I was born in the 1980s and love products of the decade, it was the 1990s that are full of memories for me. A vast majority of these memories center around favorite television programs. As Buzzfeed is quite adept at making lists of things that people care about, I decided to use their list of The 33 Best Forgotten Teen Shows Of The '90s as inspiration for today's post.

Jay Leno Retiring (Again) - Jimmy Fallon Will Host 'The Tonight Show'

I've been a fan of late night television all of my life. Having been born in 1987, I was just barely old enough to remember Johnny Carson as host of The Tonight Show. Actually, I remember Dana Carvey's legendary Johnny Carson sketches on Saturday Night Live more than Carson, who hosted Tonight for thirty years. I was five years old when the transition from Carson to Jay Leno occurred and a vaguely remember the scandal associated with it.

Doctor Who - The Bells of St. John Reactions and Review

SPOILERS, SWEETIE! This post contains spoilers for Doctor Who Season 7 Episode 7 "The Bells of St. John." If you haven't seen it, don't read!

Not having cable sucks sometimes, y'all. I've grown accustomed to watching things on Hulu, though, so you get used to it. I'm home this weekend at my family's house in Flatwoods for the Easter holiday and while they have cable, they have not subscribed to BBC America. I think my mom would love it, honestly. She watches Copper and Ripper Street on On Demand, but it's been terribly unreliable as of late. I think they should just bite the bullet and add BBC America to their package.

'Bells of St. John' Prequel Hits the Web

With only one week to go until the premiere of Season 7.2, Doctor Who fans were treated to a prequel video, written by none other than Steven Moffat. In the video, the Doctor is "despondent" as he has searched all over for Clara Oswin Oswald, the mysterious woman with whom he's now had two encounters, first in Asylum of the Daleks and most recently in The Snowmen, the Christmas Special 2012. She's mysterious, she's alluring, she's clever, and seems like she will make a great companion, once he finds her at least. Video after the break.

Beware the Ides of March

I think that's still my favorite line in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. I mean, "Et tu, Brute?" is pretty great, but I believe it's in the 1970 adaptation that has the best actor playing the Soothsayer. You see, all of the signs were pointing toward Caesar's untimely demise, but ol' JC's head had grown much too big for his laurel crown. The assassination of Julius Caesar is probably one incident in history that will continue to fascinate me. In the end, it took 23 stab wounds to bring Caesar down and Rome still went on to be the greatest power on Earth, well, you know, following a civil war and all.

Having the Roman Senate declare you dictator perpetuo (dictator in perpetuity) has some perks, really.  He did pretty much have Cleopatra in his back pocket until Marc Antony came along. Plus, he probably named a month after himself. We wouldn't have July without him, though Augustus may have made that designation.
And let's face it, Julius Caesar permeates our daily lives. There's a salad dressing named for him and even a method of child delivery, though it's technically named after his son Caesarian.

So, to commemorate the (roughly) 2,057th anniversary of Julius Caesar's assassination, I thought I'd put together a few moments in popular culture which feature the toga wearing tyrant.

Papal Pop: The Pontiff in Popular Culture

With today's announcement that the College of Cardinals had successfully chosen a new Pope in the Papal Conclave, I thought I'd probe the depths of the Internet and find some papal moments in popular culture, both good and bad. I've studied a bit about the history of the Christian church, but to be honest, my focus is a bit more modern. And although I'm not Catholic, I'm still pretty intrigued by the new pope Francis I and the process of picking the new leader of the Catholic Church. I find it interesting that this is the third pope of my lifetime. For those born before 1978, it will be your fourth.

I've put together some pop culture moments that feature the Pope, whomever he may be at the time, videos after the break.

'VIKINGS' Sails onto History Channel on March 3

They came “from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.”

Centuries before any Englishman set foot upon the soil that would be known as North America, the Vikings were supreme. The earliest Viking raids occurred in the eighth century and the Viking Age continued until the Norman Conquest of the eleventh century. The Vikings sailed most of the North Atlantic and traveled as far east as Constantinople; men under Leif Eriksson reached North America. In an ambitious production, the History Channel brings the story of Vikings to life in a 9-part miniseries beginning on March 3.

The word Viking has become synonymous with violence, brutality, and warfare. A civilization that prided themselves on overtaking their enemy in both sea and land combat, Vikings were mercenaries, looters, and conquerors of much of Europe during their Golden Age. Vikings on History sets to show that their history is much more complex, visceral, and powerful than the mythology that surrounds them suggestions. Unlike many historical dramas, creator Michael Hirst (Academy-Award winning film Elizabeth; and the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated series The Tudors), wanted to portray the life of these Dark Age raiders, traders, explorers – not from an outsider’s view, but through the eyes of Viking society itself, which may help it be more compelling.

VIKINGS follows the story of a man named Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a young farmer and family man, who finds himself frustrated by the policies of the local chieftain, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne). Haraldson continues to send his raiders east every summer, to areas that are materially poor. This exercise in futility frustrates Lothbrook, who looks to break through barriers and discover new worlds to conquer. Through the course of VIKINGS, we will see if Ragnar is able to fulfill his ambitions. In addition to a thirst for conquest, the miniseries will also focus on their worship of the Norse pantheon, including the chief god Odin. Ragnar, claims that he is a direct descendant of Odin, god of warriors slain in battle, as well as the god of curiosity. Surely, this is how Lothbrook developed his trait for wanderlust.

Fimmel and Byrne are joined by Clive Standen, George Blagden, and Gustaf Skarsgard who portray Rollo, Athelstan, and Floki, respectively. They serve to round out the cast and aid Ragnar Lothbrook on his adventures. For many years scholars believed that the Vikings targeted Christian churches directly, as many places of worship were destroyed in the wake of raids. Athelstan is a Christian monk whose life, according to the makers of VIKINGS, is turned upside down by shocking culture brought on by the raiders.

Following in the footsteps of 2012’s Hatfields and McCoys, the miniseries that showcased the West Virginia-Kentucky feud of two families in the Tug Fork region, VIKINGS will be a grand portrayal of Viking society and conquest. Don’t expect it to follow history to the absolute letter. Because of a lack of well-rounded information about the society, this writer is assured that creative licensing was taken in this series. However, Hatfields and McCoys was a very well done drama, and The Tudors had a successful four season run on Showtime (and also starred Man of Steel's Henry Cavill), so I expect good things from VIKINGS, which premieres on March 3 on The History Channel. Check your local cable listings for more information.
