Bryan Fuller and Bryan Singer May Team for Star Trek Television Series

It has been seven years since a series within the Star Trek franchise has aired new episodes. J. J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot film brought discussion of a show back into the collective consciousness and many are clamoring to see the new timeline established by that film displayed on the small screen. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel, for which no title has been announced, is set to premiere in 2013 and there has been recent buzz that a former Star Trek: Voyager producer wishes to bring the science-fiction show back to television. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bryan Fuller discussed the likelihood of achieving that, with the help of producer Bryan Singer, whose big project currently is the X-Men reboot franchise.

“Bryan and I are big fans of Trek and have discussed a take on what we would do, and we would love to do it,” Fuller says. “I don’t think anything is going to happen in any official capacity until after the next movie comes out. And I’m sure it would be wisely under J.J. Abrams’ purview of what happens. He’s the guardian of Trek right now.”

Reports have said that Abrams has been tight-lipped on his allowance of a Star Trek television series, but with the interest that Fuller and Singer are showing, they may be the best candidates for a new Trek show. The only thing that may stand in their way is Paramount Pictures and J. J. Abrams himself; their approval would have to be met before any reboot television program could premiere and would probably have to work with the schedules for any subsequent films in the Star Trek movie franchise. Both Fuller and Singer are well acquainted with the Star Trek universe. Bryan Fuller was a writer and producer on Star Trek: Voyager and also wrote a couple of episodes for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He is a self-proclaimed Star Trek nerd who says that he got into writing specifically to write for Star Trek. Bryan Singer appeared in the film Star Trek: Nemesis. Both filmmakers are currently busy and Fuller is talking Star Trek when has two other series either in development or currently filming. Hannibal, which has a 13 episode deal on NBC, is about the early years of criminal mastermind Hannibal Lecter and his involvement with Will Graham; he also has in development Mockingbird Lane, a Munsters reboot.

The only problem with Fuller that I can see is that not all of his series seem to last. He has a string of great shows like Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me, and Heroes, but they were all cancelled after relatively short runs. I hope that a new Star Trek series might have more staying power. The real question is, what would be the subject of a Star Trek series? Abrams' Star Trek reboot franchise has established a new timeline. We have seen every incarnation of the previous timeline on television up to this point, with Enterprise being a prequel to The Original Series.
