Highland Renaissance Festival Kicks Off This Weekend

There's really nothing like Renaissance Fair. From the accents, ale, and period costumes to the giant turkey legs that are nearly as big as your head, a Renaissance Fair transports you back hundreds of years. Whether you come in costume or not, you're likely to see plenty of folks dressed up in their best fairy, pirate, or other fantasy finest. The long-running Highland Renaissance Festival kicks off this weekend in Eminience, Kentucky which is located in Henry County, about 50 minutes from Louisville and 1 hour 15 minutes from Lexington.

Over seventy vendors and merchants will be set up selling their wares. When I was in high school, my drama club went to the Ohio Renaissance Festival every year and a big hit was the wax dipped hands and there will be a booth set up among the Main Street Artisans and Merchants. You can also get your face painted, have a caricature drawn, or get a henna tattoo! Or head over to Briarwood Forest for a tarot reading. There is something for everyone at the Highlands Renaissance Festival. There are even games of skill and chance and hand powered rides like King's Swing.

Daily performers either have fixed sites or roam the grounds providing entertainment to the masses. You might recognize a couple of familiar faces from Forge Con this year in Drunk & Sailor. The awesome pirate duo will be rocking the boat with their sea-faring songs. Lucky audience members may even get pulled up on stage to be part of their crew! Listen to their music here. You can also find jousting demonstrations, magic, and a children's story time.

The Highlands Renaissance Festival looks like it will be a great time! Hopefully I'll be able to head up there sometime this summer.
