Trailer Tuesday: Kingsman: The Secret Service

This post Memorial Day weekend pitted Maleficent and A Million Ways to Die in the West against one another in a box office grudge match. However, X-Men: Days of Future Past was able to hold on to the Number 2 slot for the weekend box office and knock the Seth MacFarlane comedy to Number 3. I'm going to be honest, I'm not terribly impressed with the offerings for the rest of the summer. I'll see Transformers: Age of Extinction since I saw the other three films in the theater and really the summer is all about getting to August to see Guardians of the Galaxy. In between, there's really not to offer me at this point. This week's Trailer Tuesday feature is for a film that comes out even later in the year, October, to be specific.

I saw X-Men: Days of Future past twice during its opening weekend and both times I was graced with the trailer for Kingsman: The Secret Service. Outside of the auditorium I saw the promotional stand-up for the movie with its guns and clean lines and was intrigued, but it wasn't until I actually saw the trailer that I was hooked. The film is directed and written by Matthew Vaughn, the filmmaker who brought us X-Men First Class, Stardust, and who also produced Snatch. Kingsman is an adaptation of The Secret Service by Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen). Vaughn and Millar are not strangers to the comic adaptation game, as Vaughn not only directed Kick-Ass, but he wrote the screenplay as well.

Colin Firth stars as Harry Hart, a member of The Secret Service, an "independent, international intelligence agency" who service the realm discretely, but in the most effective way possible. Hart recruits Gary Unwin, a teen who has fallen in onto the wrong side of the law, to become a young member of a new class of The Secret Service. Joining Firth in the star-studded cast is Michael Caine, Mark Strong, Mark Hamil, and Samuel L. Jackson, who plays an American named Valentine. According to IMDB, Jack Davenport is cast as Lancelot in the movie, but he's not featured in this first trailer. No idea, who Mark Hamil plays in the film as well, but I have a feeling it's probably a big bad.

The movie looks visually appealing, as is one of Matthew Vaughn's trademarks. I particularly enjoyed very the very wide vertical and horizontal shots. The estate training grounds look amazing and I think that the action sequences, if First Class and Kick-Ass are any indication, will be first-rate. Having not read The Secret Service, I'm unsure how they'll fit the whole series into one film, if that is even the idea, considering movie series deals are the new black.

But let me just gush for a minute. I have a total raging Ladyboner for Colin Firth. I suppose the first film I recall him playing in was Shakespeare in Love, I hadn't watched Pride and Prejudice at that point, but it was his role as Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary that sealed the deal for me. He is truly talented and one of the premiere actors of our day, but he also exudes this British charm, attitude, sex appeal, and a certain je ne sais quoi. I literally cannot even with Colin Firth.

Kingsman: The Secret Service hits theaters October 24, but I really don't know if I can wait that long.
