Terrible Mothers of Popular Culture

Today's Geeky Question of the Day in the Kentucky Geek Girl community on Facebook asked, "Who is the best mom of Popular Culture?" The more I thought about it, the more I realized that there are some pretty terrible moms in Pop Culture as well, even specifically in Science Fiction. Folks in the ?otD thread included some great moms such as Molly Weasley, Catelyn Tully, and even *shudder* Lori Grimes, but I thought that there has to be a flip side to this. So, I put on my Thinking Fedora and came up with a sampling of terrible mothers of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror.

These are by no means in-depth character analyses.This is more just a fun look at the way people perceive characters, not a true character study. I don't necessarily agree with all of these points 100%, but I think that there some pretty obvious points. Also, there will be spoilers, which I am sorry is a bit unavoidable. Bryan Fuller and Bryan Singer May Team for Star Trek Television Series

It has been seven years since a series within the Star Trek franchise has aired new episodes. J. J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek reboot film brought discussion of a show back into the collective consciousness and many are clamoring to see the new timeline established by that film displayed on the small screen. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel, for which no title has been announced, is set to premiere in 2013 and there has been recent buzz that a former Star Trek: Voyager producer wishes to bring the science-fiction show back to television. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bryan Fuller discussed the likelihood of achieving that, with the help of producer Bryan Singer, whose big project currently is the X-Men reboot franchise.

The Legend of Korra gets a release date and new trailer!

I first watched Avatar: The Last Airbender a couple of summers ago. Using my powers of the Fire nation, I burned right through the series and I was so sad that when I watched the finale. When I found out that there was going to be a new series on Nickelodeon, I rejoiced with the masses. As of today, we finally know how much longer fans will have to wait: the new series The Legend of Korra will premiere on April 14! Check out the brand new trailer after the break.

Dexter Killer Cast in CBS Sherlock Holmes Pilot

CBS has been shopping a pilot for a new modern-day adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic Sherlock Holmes stories called Elementary. With the relative success of the Warner Brothers movie franchise starring Robert Downey, Jr. and the amazing, spectacular, freaking awesome BBC series Sherlock, apparently the network wants in on this action. The RDJ films, of course, have been set in Victorian London, while the BBC series, starting the swoon-worthy Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, are also a modern-day take on the storie of Holmes and his partner in awesome Watson. News broke today that the Sherlock that CBS wants has been cast. British actor Jonny Lee Miller, former husband of Angelina Jolie, has starred recently in an arc on Dexter, and has appeared in Eli Stone which ran on ABC in 2009.

Geeky Super Bowl Commercials

Super bowl commercials are as old as the game itself. In fact, the championship that pits the two best teams in American Football turns 45 this year. The Super Bowl is the most watched event of the year and the ad space is worth millions of dollars, but who cares about sports? Seriously, folks, why does everyone watch the game now if not for the commercials? In the past few weeks, the 2012 Super Bowl commercials have been unveiled and are being shared on Facebook walls across the world. With the Avengers spot, the G.I. Joe Retaliation commercial, and an homage to Star Wars on the slate this year, I thought we could take a look at Super Bowl commercials of years past. Clips after the break!
