It's like Christmas for cinephiles; the Academy Awards nominations were announced this morning. Gravity and American Hustle lead the way with 10 nominations each, "12 Years a Slave" is just behind with 9 nominations. Coming off a strong showing at the Golden Globes, "Dallas Buyers Club" has proven formidable with Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor wins. Surprisingly enough, Tom Hanks was not nominated for either major appearance in a film this year, for Best Actor in "Captain Phillips" or Best Supporting Actor in "Saving Mr. Banks." Speaking of, Emma Thompson who portrayed Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers in the Disney film was not nominated either, and had been considered a lock at a nomination. It seems the Academy told Disney to "go fly a kite." Other snubs include "Fruitvale Station" and "Lee Daniel's The Butler," a Civil Rights drama about a butler who served seven presidents. I'm happy that "The Great Gatsby" got some love in costuming.
I cannot say enough good things about "12 Years a Slave" and I was very happy to see that it won Best Picture at the Golden Globes on Sunday. I'm not going to lie, as much as I love Jennifer Lawrence, I'd love for Best Supporting Actress to go to Lupita Nyong’o. The Kenyan actress is up for SAG and BAFTA in the same category, but between her and Lawrence, it's going to be a toss-up. I'm certainly happy for all of J-Law's success, but I'd love to see Nyong'o recognized for her outstanding portrayal of the pain, mental anguish, and heartache of slavery. Michael Fassbender's nomination for "12 Years a Slave" comes at no surprise to me considering his remarkable acting as the plantation owner and master of Chiwetel Ejifor's Solomon Northup. Some of the most disturbing and heartwrenching scenes of the film take place between Fassbender and Nyong'o. I
acknowledge my bias to "12 Years a Slave" considering it was the time period that I focused on with my history major, but I really cannot stress how amazing the film is and how glad I am that this story was told.
"Gravity," which at the heart of it all is also a story about survival, was visually stunning and really does deserve all of the awards for which it is nominated. It is also nominated for SAG awards and BAFTAs, so we'll see if the film reaches its lofty potential or is pulled down by the weight of its competitors. (Get it, a joke about Gravity and the movie is called Gravity. There's no gravity in space. Get it? Tough crowd.) Sandra Bullock gave a commanding performance as Dr. Ryan Stone, who is left adrift in space after an explosion. I am honestly convinced that the movie was filmed in space, that Alfonso Cuaron and company carted everyone into space and they filmed up there for a couple of years. That is the only logical explanation to just how extraordinary it looks.
I've seen several of the Best Picture nominees now and will be reviewing them in an Academy Awards series, so be on the look out for those. Ellen DeGeneres hosts the 86th annual Academy Awards on Sunday March 2. It has been announced that the theme for this year's ceremony is "A Celebration of Movie Heroes."
